Planning on upgrading to Mac OSX Lion? Proceed with Caution!

Mac OSX Lion (10.7), which is due for release any day now, will bring many new features and performance benefits. However, as with any change or upgrade in operating systems, this can bring potential issues, bugs, and glitches - especially with professional imaging software and hardware.

It is highly likely that Lion will NOT ship with Rosetta. What's Rosetta? It's an emulation technology for older processors (Power PC) and program language. Many of the programs and software that you currently use today may be utilizing the Rosetta technology in OS 10.6. Several color management software packages are PowerPC-only, including X-Rite's Eye One Match software for printer profiling and monitor profiling. This means that this (and other PowerPC-only) software will NOT run on Lion. Many printer utilities and applications also utilize Rosetta.

To determine which of your applications are PowerPC-only, do the following:

  1. Click the Apple in the upper left corner of your Mac.
  2. Select "About this Mac" and then click the "More Info" button on the box that pops up.
  3. On the left side of that window (under "Contents"), under "Software", you will see "Applications," so go ahead and select that.
  4. On the right side, you will see a list of all the software on your computer. (It may take several minutes to populate this list, depending on your computer speed and how many applications you have.)
  5. There are several columns. You are looking for the column labeled "Kind" (you may have to expand this window to a larger window to see all the columns).
  6. If you see "PowerPC" as the kind for any of your software, it will have an issue in Lion.

As with any operating system upgrade, we recommend to upgrade with caution. Printer drivers, scanner drivers, camera drivers and other software can all have problems with new operating systems, so we recommend waiting to verify with the manufacturer that your software and devices are fully compatible with Mac OS 10.7 (Lion).

One caveat: Apple has not officially said that Rosetta is not included in Lion. It is possible that Apple could pull a last-minute surprise and ship Lion with the Rosetta technology, but all beta releases have NOT included it (while prior Apple beta releases for previous operating systems have).

DTG places the power

Founded in 1998 and originally focusing on photo and fine art businesses, Digital Tech- nology Group (DTG), the most recent DALIM SOFTWARE reseller in the US, built its leading reputation by providing expert consultation, products, and support as solutions that provided a quick return on investment for their customers. DTG’s solutions have consisted of high end digital capture equipment from Kodak, Canon and Hasselblad, color management and workstations from X-Rite and Apple, and printing and proofing equipment from Epson. Combining this leading edge technology with their knowledge, training and sup- port infrastructure, DTG has accumulated a large and loyal customer base over the years.

Today, while still serving their core customer demograph- ic, DTG has evolved from its foundation as not only a giclee and digital photography driven systems integrator, but into a full service premedia solutions provider.

Sal Passanisi, Director of ProMedia and Proofing ex- plains, “The new wave of digital tools is the largest tsu- nami to hit content providers since the Macintosh, Post- Script and the LaserWriter.” Sal should know. He worked on R&D projects using the Apple Lisa, and has been a prepress systems integrator since 1987. Sal also owned his own printing company and is known throughout the industry as ‘The Real Mac Daddy’.

When DTG places the power of TWIST and DIA- LOGUE into an agency or studio customer’s hands, it provides them all the tools that their print service providers have been using for years. When they com- bine their input (digital photography) and application (DALIM SOFTWARE remote proofing and workflow solutions) with output (Epson-based automated hard proofing systems), from an ROI perspective it is a so- lution that cannot be beat. It typically saves the cus- tomer hundreds of thousands of dollars in premedia costs.

Scott Erickson, founder of DTG, sees a growing trend. “Our high-end commercial photography studios are now asking for their own content-aware print pro- duction tools. With a certified workflow at the initial capture of the content production, automation can be applied down the line. TWIST allows us to automate certain tasks, like drop shadows, color conversions and certified proofing — all this at the beginning of the workflow rather than the end, much like we do with fine art capture and giclee output.”

Sal Passanisi puts it another way. “In the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy was told to pay no attention to the man behind the curtain, but to fear the wizard. Well, with the DALIM SOFTWARE toolset available on the Ma- cintosh platform, DTG is like Toto pulling the curtain back — showing the customer how easy it is to move the levers. It really is an automated PDF-to-print solu- tion. ‘You’re not in Kansas anymore’.”

Consistently keeping pace with current and future technologies has allowed DTG to remain an industry leader in digital color systems integration. By partner- ing with Blanchard Systems and DALIM SOFTWARE, DTG is delivering its customers new, cutting edge ROI-driven solutions based on solid, proven software, expert integration, and unyielding support.

If you create your own, custom printer ICC profiles and have upgraded to Adobe Photoshop CS5, you will have noticed one, glaring omission from the print dialog box. Adobe no longer allows you to choose "No Color Management" from its Color Handling drop list. This creates a problem when trying to print ICC target files without altering the color. We have created a step by step guide with a workaround to this problem. You can either download the pdf, or check out the knowledgebase of the new support suite on our web page.
Are you having strange printing issues in Apple's 10.6 Snow Leopard? If you are, then you are more than likely using ICC profiles that were saved as version 4. For whatever reason, Apple's Snow Leopard 10.6 are not compatible with version 4 profiles (previous Apple operating systems were compatible with version 4). Check out our support information here for more information.

DTG Receives Epson Stylus Pro GS6000

After several months of eager anticipation DTG has finally received our demo unit Epson GS6000 solvent printer. We actually took delivery of the GS6000 at this year's Decor Expo tradeshow in Atlanta on September 5th and have since brought the printer back to our demo facility in Tampa. After hearing so much about this printer, we can truly say that our initial experience with the Epson Stylus Pro GS 6000 has far exceeded our expectations. We unboxed, assembled, and installed the printer in less than 2 hours and installed the included Colorburst RIP software on our PC. Epson provided us with some of their new Solvent compatible canvas and we printed several test prints. The quality of the prints blew us away. We of course are accustomed to Epson inkjet quality but did not expect the solvent inks to be as vivid as they were. Attendees at the tradeshow who have had experience printing on solvent canvas commented that they could not believe the GS6000 was solvent based. We can truly say that the GS6000 produces fine art quality giclee's at Decor speeds and costs. Overall the printer operated flawlessly for the 3 days of Decor Expo. We did not once have to perform a head cleaning or any maintenance. Now that we have the printer back in the office we will put it through the ringer and test it with fine art papers, photo papers, and various signage media. Look for a more comprehensive review shortly.

Hasselblad H3DII-50, Tilt Shift, and HVC Adapter

Hasselblad has announced the release of the newest addition to the H3DII-Series of medium format DSLR cameras, the H3DII-50. At 50 megapixel, it produces a 300MB, 16-bit image from the newly designed Kodak KAF-50100 36x49mm CCD sensor. The H3DII-50 incorporates Hasselblad's latest technologies and integrated features, including the industry-leading Digital-APO Correction (DAC) and Ultra Focus Technology. This announcement makes the Hasselblad H3DII50, 50 megapixel digital camera, the highest resolution camera of its kind within the professional photographic market. With the announcement of the H3D-II50, Hasselbald has also released additional H-Series accessories, including the new Hasselblad HTS 1.5X Tilt / Shift lens adapter for use with the existing, wide-angle HC/D Series lenses, as well as some proper large-format accessories for the current range of H3D & H3DII Series digital backs. The new Hasselblad HTS 1.5X Tilt-Shift Lens Adapter is compatible with the existing HC-D 28mm f/4.0, HC 35mm f/3.5, HC 50mm f/3.5, and HC 80mm f/2.8 lenses. The adapter has the appearance of Hasselblad’s previous ArcBody construction, however it incorporates the necessary optics and precision to allow infinity focus with the wide-angle range of Hasselblad HC-Series lenses on today’s ultra-high resolution H3DII-Series cameras. These optics not only provide the necessary image circle for significant movements, but also creates a 1.5X magnification of the focal lenght of the lens attached. It also features 18mm of + / - shift, as well as 10˚ of + / - tilt, and the ability to rotate 90˚ in either direction to allow for ideal orientation of the camera along with the movements of the adapter. Additionally, Hasselblad has developed a dedicated large-format adapter, the Hasselblad H3D View Camera adapter kit (HVC) for use with the H3D/II digital backs, allowing for ideal, portable power configuration, and a reliable viewing solution on a large-format camera system. The adapter makes for practical use of the H3DII-22, H3DII-31, H3DII-39, and H3DII-50 digital backs, not only on the dedicated H3DII camera body, as well as digitally-capable large format cameras like the various 6×9cm models available from ARCA-SWISS, Sinar, Linhof, and Plaubel. Also, included with this announcement, are specially designed sync cables for proper use and control, via Hasselblad’s digital back, of electronic shutter lens systems from Schneider and Rodenstock. Please contact DTG's Professional Photo Division at 800.681.0024 for more information and details on these exciting products, as well as possible upgrade promotion opportunities with existing Hasselblad systems.

Epson Stylus Pro GS6000 Solvent Printer

Epson’s much anticipated entry into the solvent inkjet printer market finally came to fruition with the announcement and unveiling of the Epson Stylus Pro GS6000 at this year’s ISA tradeshow. After getting a “sneak peak” a month earlier and also seeing it at ISA, I am confident in saying that it has been worth the wait. The GS6000 sets a new standard in image quality, production, and ease of use for solvent printers. A short list of Epson GS6000 printer features include: * 64 inch wide print path * Compatible with existing solvent media * Output quality up to 1440x1440 DPI * Droplets as small as 3.7 picoliters * 8 Color inkset with new orange and green inks for wide gamut * Virtually odorless, nickel free ink is extremely Eco-friendly * Built-in media take-up reel system * Includes Colorburst Professional Postscript 3 RIP * Intelligent Preventative Maintenance minimizes user maintenance and downtime * 950ml ink tanks can be hot –swapped during printing * 1 Year Epson Warranty Critical testing and comparing of the Stylus Pro GS6000 to existing printers in its class will be impossible until we receive a demo unit but upon initial looks the GS6000 appears to “leapfrog” the competition in terms of print quality, production capabilities, and ease of operation. This new printer reminds us of Epson’s entry into the wide format aqueous market with the Epson Stylus Pro 9000 back in 1999. They looked at the market leaders at the time, HP and Encad, and in the 9000 brought a product to market that was higher quality, significantly easier to use, more reliable and at a very aggressive price. I guess Epson’s tag line for the GS6000 says it all: “The way solvent printing should be!”

The full inkset includes nine ink cartridges: photo black, matte black, light black, light light black, cyan, light cyan, yellow, vivid magenta and vivid light magenta. The two magenta inks use new high-density pigments that create more vibrant colour, especially blues and magenta, for example those found in seascapes or landscapes. The UltraChrome K3 ink with Vivid Magenta, enables superb grey balance and precise colour without any colour cast. It also maintains the superior features of the UltraChrome K3 ink such as great colour accuracy of neutral and dark colours, excellent short-term colour stability and smooth tonal gradation from shadow to light. The issue of metamerism is virtually eliminated with this new inkset. The permanent Epson Micro Piezo printhead also offers unrivalled consistency in each print. Every print will be the same as the first, even if the artwork is printed months apart, making it ideal for studios producing limited edition print runs. Also included is the Epson Super Halftone technology, a new image processing engine for dot mapping. It enhances the image detail that may be lost in low resolution images. A new mapping algorithm reduces the graininess at both low and high resolution. The end result delivers smooth images with more accurate colour representation. Epson is also launching This new online portal allows Epson Stylus Pro owners to retrieve up-to-the-minute technical information and monitor the performance of each printer. The secure website allows users to view print job activity, hardware information and historical data, and tracks key performance indicators such as cost of ownership and cost per print. can also be accessed remotely by service contractors to quickly identify the cause and scope of any queries, which saves time in unnecessary call-out fees. DTG ships Phatte Black Cartridges

DTG is pleased to be offering Colorbyte’s 6.1 version of ImagePrint that offers Phatte Black compatibility for the new Epson 7800 and Epson 9800 wide format printers, as well as the Epson 4800 printer. DTG is also selling the two different Phatte Black cartridges, one 220ml for the Epson 4800, and one 220ml for the Epson 7800/9800 printers. Phatte Black cartridges are simply matte black cartridges that have had the chip reset to look like the light light black to the printer. Colorbyte’s phatte black technology in ImagePrint 6.1 allows Epson 4800, 7800, and 9800 printer owners to run both the photo black and matte black in the printer simultaneously without the costly need to switch them out. Users can do this by removing the light light black cartridge and replacing it with a matte black cartridge that has had the chip reset to make it look like a light light black to the printer. Because of ImagePrint’s advanced screening and profile technology, the removal of the light light black does has a minimal affect on image quality.

DTG Ships the first Epson 7800 & 9800 Printers

DTG has begun shipping the new Epson Stylus Pro 7800 printer and Epson Stylus Pro 9800 printer to customers on our priority waiting list. DTG will be exhibiting at the 2005 Florida Professional Photographers tradeshow at the Sheraton in Orlando. We will be showing the new Epson 4800 printer, the new Kodak 9810 printer, X-Rites Pulse Color Elite profiling system, Hasselblad digital photography systems, and more. Visit us in booth #s 60-62.

DTG New Web Site

Digital Technology Group launches new web site! The new is a very user friendly, efficient, and informational web site. This site was designed with our users in mind making it very customer centric. We also have tried to make this site as informational as possible with more PDF spec sheets, user manuals, and support information. With the new site, users can log in to view their shopping carts, past orders, real-time price quotes and more! Look for even more features in a few weeks including order tracking and real time inventory. If you have any comments, concerns, or suggestions please feel free to contact Scott Erickson at 800-681-0024
